Baseball's Last Hero: 21 Clemente Stories

Please Note:  This is a special added review of a movie I attended last night in North Hollywood.

Anyone who is familiar with the history of baseball probably knows the name Roberto Clemente.  Baseball's Last Hero:  21 Clemente Stories uses the letters of his three names (Roberto Walker Clemente) to portray what made him a superstar on and off the field.  Clemente (Jamie Nieto) has been picked up by the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are in desperate need of finding a top player.  It is a tough learning experience for the Puerto Rican athlete, encountering racism, expectations and realizing his purpose in life.
Director Richard Rossi shows in wonderful detail why Clemente is so in love with Vera (Marilinda Rivera). One of the film's best scenes is when Clemente goes to church to seek guidance from a sister.  The movie loses its footing a bit as it constantly returns to a memorial service as friends and family remember Clemente. This movie is about the terrific performance of Nieto, who captures Clemente's grace and wonderful spirit.

This film receives 4 out of 5 stars.

This independent film is scheduled to be released on Dec. 31.
